Xmas comes early

The Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Virtual Museum received an early present from the West Kildonan Curling Club.

After nearly 100 years of operation, the West Kildonan Curling Club is shutting its doors for financial reasons. "It didn't happen overnight, it's a progressive thing. If you'd been curling there for 30 years, you'd see the number of evening curlers dwindling, and if you were on the financial side you'd see expenses and utility costs increasing," explained former manager Denis Laliberte.

The building and equipment have been sold and the final task of the club was to liquid their assets by making donations to other community associations. Among their many donations, the West Kildonan Curling Club chose to donate $10,000 to the Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Virtual Museum. The presentation was made by past presidents Denis Laliberte and Neil Wawrykow on December 9th at the Rossmere Curling Cub. Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Hall of Fame was Glen Henkewich.

There has been a long association between lacrosse and the West K Club, as many retired lacrosse players picked up brooms and played the roaring game at WKCC. As well many lacrosse social events were hosted upstairs in the club room at the curling club. The club room was adorned with numerous historical lacrosse photos that fueled numerous lacrosse conversations.

The Hall of Fame has no specific plans for the cash, but there has been discussions about expanding the virtual museum by adding an extensive archive of newspaper articles and photos.

The Hall of Fame would like to thank the executive and membership of the West Kildonan Curling Club.

 Merry Christmas!
