2025 INDUCTEE SERGE BALCAEN

SERGE BALCAEN- BUILDER CATEGORY
Serge started playing lacrosse with the St. Boniface Tomahawks. After completing his playing career with the Junior Tomahawks, he maintained interest in the game by attending (with his children) games at Kelvin. As soon as his children displayed an interest in playing lacrosse, he transitioned to coaching with the Sidewinders lacrosse. After a couple years coaching he became Zone Convenor for the Sidewinders- ultimately becoming president of the Sidewinders zone. His involvement within the zone and his desire to grow the game of lacrosse in Winnipeg led Balcaen to the positions of the president of the Red River Lacrosse Association and the Manitoba Lacrosse Association. His desire to grow the game and improve the quality of lacrosse in Manitoba, while expanding opportunities for local players to access scholarships in the United States, lead to the formation of True Lacrosse Manitoba. Founded in the US, True Lacrosse brings lacrosse players from across North America and puts them at the forefront of college recruiting process. The program proved to be successful with a significant number of Manitoba trained players earning scholarships to US Schools. As well many of the young coaches who "cut their teeth" in the True program have continued to coach in elite level programs in Manitoba. In 2014, to maintain the very successful Manitoba Gryphons/ Blizzard program, Serge and his partners purchased the Blizzard franchise in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. The continued operation of the Blizzard maintains the opportunity for elite level lacrosse players to play the game in Manitoba. As well a significant number of Blizzard players have earned scholarships to US schools. While being active at the board and management levels, Balcaen continue to coach with the Sidewinders and at the provincial level (both box and field). Serge's work in the board room and on the floor/ field has provided young Manitoba lacrosse players (both male and female) an opportunity to play and grow in the game of lacrosse |
